Matthew 2:13-23 part 1

Matthew 2:13-23

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
“A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”

After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Escape to Egypt/Return to Nazareth:

Part 1: PHOPHECY FULFILLED, AGAIN

Matthew 2:13-23

Pray

In today’s section of scripture, there are 2 main points.

Main Point #1: Prophesy Fulfilled:

Main Point #2: The Two Camps (which we will cover next week)
(Illustrated in every paragraph in this section)

First read Matt 2:13-23.
Then read Eph 1:1-14

Intro comments: There are a LOT of supernatural things going on here in this short passage.

  1. Dreams (God speaking to men thru angels in dreams)
  2. Angels
  3. Prophesy
  4. And, most of all, we see God sovereignly and supernaturally superintending history and fulfilling prophecy; fulfilling His promises.

Regarding the 1st main point, I have these questions:

QUESTIONS:

Have you heard of the terms biased or preconceived notions?
(Have you ever heard of the term pre-suppositional theology?)
Do you think that people have biases one way or another? Where do you think preconceived notions come from?
(Discuss these questions)

Main Point #1; Prophesy Fulfilled: God’s Sovereignty Over History and the Affairs of Men:

Why is this not only important to Matthew’s first century audience – but to us as well?

This gives us the sure, undeniable confidence that –  The Scriptures Are Absolutely TRUE and TRUSTWORTHY
And this has huge ramifications for our faith!

Prophecy Fullfiled – AGAIN and AGAIN.

Four Prophecies in Matthew Chapter Two.
There are 4 prophesies in Matt 2 alone!
Matthew 2:5-6, 15, 17, 23
1. (NIV)  Matt 2:5-6 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6   But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

2. Matt 2:13-15.  (NIV) 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

In vs 13, in this command to get up hurriedly and to escape to Egypt, we can see both God’s protecting care, Herod’s cruelty.

Matt 2:17-18. (NIV) 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”

Matt 2:21-23. (NIV) 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Another way to understand the phrase “through the prophets” could be to take the OT  prophets many messages  “collectively;” that the  (OT) prophets generally and severally pointed to these things.

Instead of talking about the details of each prophesy individually, which could take all day, I thought it might be more fruitful for us today to talk about why they were so important to Matthew and his audidnce, as well as how important that still are for us today

Main Point #2: The Two Camps  (next week)

Every week close with SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: A QUESTION

Last week we asked the question, “What is the greatest thing in a ALL your life?

Now, the question for this week to think about is:

What is the most important thing you can DO in this life?

(Answer – at least my answer)

Prayerfully read, study, meditate on, memorize and wrestle with, the Word of God – SO THAT – You can love the Lord your God with ALL your heart.

Remember from last week –

You can’t really love God if you don’t know who He really is!

After class notes

at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, that there are only two types of people – two camps. One camp, or one type of person is building there house – their lives – on the Rock. The other camp, the other type of person, is building their house – their lives on sand. There is no third scenario, no third category of people, no third camp that people fall into. We all – no matter where we are on on our journey – are in either one camp or the other. Again, there are only two camps: Either we are in Christ, or we are not. Either God is our Father, or Satan, the devil, is our father. Either we belong to God, or we belong to the devil. See John 8:42-47
